The Volvo Ocean Race is an around the world race that takes place every three years. This year the race began in Alicante, Spain on October 22, 2017 and will travel to thirteen destinations around the world before finishing in The Hague in the Netherlands the end of June, 2018.
As sailing enthusiasts, Island Pursuit is delighted that the Volvo Race includes a stop in Newport, RI from May 8th through the 20th! Visitors come from all over NE and beyond to our beautiful city of Newport to see the boats, attend the events in the Race Village, and just be a part of this very exciting international sailing scene. The Race Village opens tomorrow on May 8th but some boats are expected in as early as this evening!
There are seven teams competing in this race, each team is representing a country of sponsorship but each crew on the the teams are multi-national as well as male and female! One team, Turn the Tide on Plastic, is even led by a veteran female skipper, Dee Cafari from Britain. This is Dee's debut as a skipper in the Volvo Race. Another skipper to watch is Charlie Enwright of Vestas 11TH Hour. Charlie is from Bristol, RI and graduated from Brown University, a local favorite!

During the Volvo Races' stay in Newport, Island Pursuit is celebrating this world class event by promoting our relationship with Southern Tide and OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to track and study keystone marine species such as great white and tiger sharks. OCEARCH is also committed to conservation, outreach, and education on a measurable global scale. Island Pursuit is proud to carry Southern Tide and OCEARCH brand apparel, proceeds of which go to support the great work OCEARCH is doing for our oceans' ecosystems.
Another company that is working diligently to keep our oceans clean and free of plastic debris is 4Ocean! They are a young, Florida-based company who sells bracelets made out of recycled plastic. Each bracelet represents one pound of plastic debris removed from the ocean. The company, which started in 2016, is already responsible for removing over 629K pounds of plastic from the ocean and coastline!
