Wooden Ships
Wooden Ships is so much more than adorable oversized sweaters with fun graphics. The company was created by two Harvard Grads, Paola Buendia and Mark Donovan, following a backpacking trip through Indonesia. They loved the people and the environment so much, they set up shop in Bali!
Dedicated to lean production and zero waste, Wooden Ships sweaters are "made to order' which means they don't produce a lot of stock that they "might" sell. They can assure you that their sweaters are produced in an ethically run facility becuase they own the factory in Bali! They offer higher wages, and clean and safe work environment for their workers.
Wooden Ships is also philanthropic in that they support many organizations such as Earth Justice, Sea Shepherd International, Organic Consumbers Organizations, International Ant-Poaching, to name just a few. They are commited to keeping a low carbon footprint. Their facility is 85% solar powered. They recycle all paper, plastic, glass and metal in their factory in Bali and donate unused yarn to local organizations who use it as stuffing for pillows and dolls.
When you invest in a Wooden Ships sweater, you're not just buying something cute to wear, you're supporting a company that is combining its love of fashion with its love for the environment, for giving back, for providing safe working conditions for people, and safe living conditions for the areas' animals.
The "wow" factor has so much more to do with this company's practices than just the aesthetic of it's products! Well done Paola and Mark!
